Model Steam Engine Visit

As part of Bethany's topic homework she chose to explain how a steam engine works.  She drew a simple diagram of the mechanics involved and was able to name and explain the key parts of the process to us.

As well as this, we were also lucky to receive a visit from Bethany's grandfather, who brought in his model steam engine, Dixie.  He explained to us how the coal is heated up in the fire and the steam that is produced is piped through a cylinder and piston, which he likened to a bicycle pump.  The steam then causes the piston to move, which moves the train.

We really appreciated this opportunity and we are even more excited to start reading our classic novel The Railway Children.
