Week 1&2 - Summer 1 (2024)

Our story focus for the past two weeks has been ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. Our caterpillars arrived in the post and the children have enjoyed watching them grow. They have been learning about the life cycle of the butterfly and have taken part in activities around the subject such as making caterpillars using 3D materials, paint and playdough. They also listened to the story ‘Mad about Minibeasts’.

Our song this week was ‘The Life Cycle Song’. The children thought that this was very funny!

Our Poetry Basket poem was ‘Popcorn’, the children enjoyed learning and acting out this poem.

The children learned about St George and did activities about this including drawing, colouring, listening to stories and painting flags.

April is the month of the military child. We talked about how some of the children’s parents are in the military and what this means. Some of our military children talked about what happens when their parents go on deployment and some of the strategies they use to help them until their parent returns including how they communicate with them whilst they are away. We read some stories about military families and the children were very interested in this. We talked about how kind our military children are to share their mummies and daddies to help keep us all safe. We watched a video about the dandelion as this is associated with the military child. Just like the dandelion, military children are resilient, can put down roots almost anywhere, adapt to their surroundings and flourish. The children made their own dandelion pictures using craft resources and paint.

We have been focussing on developing maths skills. The children learned a clapping song, making sure that they only did one clap for each number, developed skills in sorting, learned new mathematical concepts, developed their subitising skills and used the five frames to represent quantities.

We have had a new child join our pre-school. The children have made her feel very welcome. Our children are amazing!
