River Meon trip

A river study of the Meon

Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th September

As part of our River topic this term, on Monday afternoon our river expert Mr Irving visited us in school. We created a large plan of the River Meon, labelled it and added a whole host of animals, insects, natural features and human features that can be found in and around the River Meon.

The following morning (Tuesday), we met Mr Irving at the banks in St Clair's Meadow, Soberton. We measured the river, took a cross section of the river and then took samples from the river to find our what creatures live in the water. We learnt that if a river was healthy there would be a range of species of creatures in there. It was very healthy as we found Bullhead fish, Sticklebacks, minnows and even a trout. There was a water scorpion, 13 Mayfly nymphs and over 276 Freshwater shrimp to name just some!

In the afternoon, we looked at the water scorpion under the microscope, recorded our results, sketched some of the creatures we had found and played a game of Survivor!
