Week 1 & 2 - Spring 2 (2024)

During the past two weeks, our book focus has been 'The Three Little Pigs'. The children have really enjoyed this focus and have taken part in lots of activities relating to the story including yoga, making pig houses from different materials, testing which one was the strongest, recalling the story and acting out the story.

Our song focus has been 'Old MacDonald'. The children have been making mud for the animals to play in and have been learning the names of the adults and their young. We watched a video clip of chicks hatching and played 'Guess the sound' when listening to animal noises.

We follow a programme called 'The Poetry Basket' to teach the children poems. They act out the poems, recite them and learn new language as a result. Our poem for the past two weeks has been 'Pancakes'. Many of our children can recite this without any support which is fantastic!

I introduced 'Concept Cat' to the children. This is a way of introducing new language to the children using a toy cat. It is part of our 'Word Aware' programme. Please see the link below relating to a song and rap. The children have picked it up very quickly. Our concept this week has been 'tallest'. We have been exploring this and the children have been using the word in their play. We are continuing to support the children to take turns in their speaking and listening during conversations. We have a 'talking spoon' during group times, this gives children a visual clue when to talk and listen and gives each child the opportunity to speak without being interrupted, giving them thinking time to respond.

We are looking forward to our World Book day activities next week and doing many other activities to encourage learning through play!
