Homework

Homework Expectations in Reception

Reading

Your child should bring their book bag, reading log and reading books into school every day. Try and hear your child read everyday - the more practice the better; aim to write a comment in their reading log at least 3 times a week. Each time they read at home will help them with our Reading Challenge (more information to follow).  Books will be collected in on a Friday, when they will be changed.

Homework

Your child will bring their Homework folder home each Tuesday. This will contain a piece of Phonics and Maths homework. Homework folders should then be handed in the following Monday.  The work we send home will be familiar to your child - practice really helps.  Each piece should only take about 5 minutes, and initially will be letter recognition and number formation.  However please make sure that your child is doing it correctly -  it is much easier to make a habit than break a habit!

Phonics

This term this will mostly be letter recognition, blending and rhyming, and by the end of the year it will sometimes include spelling homework.

Maths

Each week your child will come home with one piece of maths homework. It is really important for your child to become fluent in number facts.  In Reception, the key number facts are all around counting, reading, writing and ordering numbers to 10 and 20, finding 1 more and 1 less to 10, so every week your child will come home with 1 key activity.  This may be something just to talk about or practice and will include a range of activities to practice mental maths skills and a lot of this can be done as you come and go from school e.g. counting or looking for numbers.
