Owl Babies

Owl Babies

It all started when Imogen kept going back to a book all about Seasons and would show us the pictures about animals in Winter.  We talked all about animals who hibernate.  We then also talked about animals who are nocturnal.  We made some owls when playing outside for our own Forest School, (See our "Off Outside" page) and we carried on with this for a couple of weeks.  The children made nests out of twigs outside.

We used photos of the children's nests for our Maths work on  Subtraction.  How many owls flew away?  The children worked with a partner to make up some "take away" stories.
The children did lots of paintings of the Owl Babies and wrote captions to go with them.
The children learnt the story and we would retell it, using signs to help them for story language such as "Once upon a time...So... after that... The End".   The children then made story maps.

"Talk for writing" Signs

Story Maps

The children explored making pictures of the story in all sorts of different ways.
The children decorated little cakes as owls - look out for wings, beaks and feet.
